السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Alhamdulillah!  The Read & Write Arabic Course is still going strong.

So far there are about 70 students registered for the course.  About 30 students attend classes at the Heideveld Mosque.  The rest are receiving the notes and audio/ video lessons via WhatsApp.

As stated before the main focus of this course is the Reading & Writing of Arabic.  The course will also cover most Tajwid Rules as well as some grammar rules (indirectly).

So far we've managed to complete the First Module, although we'll be revising all aspects during the next two weeks.  We shall also start the Second Module within the next few days.  Yes, the classes are only once a week (Monday evenings), but lessons are sent to the students via WhatsApp throughout the week.

The students have been requested to complete all the exercises of Module One and based on the results they will be regrouped, according to levels of competence or attendance.  The students who are not attending the classes will be put in two groups: Those who can cope on their own and those who will be linked to a future group of on-line or attending students.

The aim is to go fully on-line with this course as well as other courses from September 2022 onwards, In-Sha-Allah.  The format of the on-line program will be explained soon.

Please watch this space!

Wa-Salaam!

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Al-hamdu-lillah!  The 2022 Read And Write Arabic Class has started.

READ & WRITE ARABIC

 INTRODUCTION

After covering these aspects and answering questions relating to this, the following introductory lesson was presented:

The phrase:  لَا إلهَ إلَّا اللّه was written on the board.  I then pointed out that this phrase contains FOUR WORDS - but only THREE LETTERS- which are repeated a few times!  This phrase (لَا إلهَ إلَّا اللّه) is part of the “shahaadah” (Declaration of Faith) in Islam.  In the Noble Quran we find these words appearing in many ayaat.  In fact they appear more than 3600 times in Al-Quran!

The THREE LETTERS are:   ا   -  ل  and   ـه  .

I then showed the students how to write these three letters.   The first letter, Alif ( ا ), is written like you would write the number I (one), the Capital “I” (as in: “I am here.”) or the small letter “l” , (as in: “letter”), etc. In other words a simple downward stroke!

Remember Arabic is written from right to left, unlike English.

The Laam (ل) is written like the Capital L in English – But you draw a mirror image instead! So, you start the letter from top to bottom, like the alif, but then you turn to the left, not to the right (as the English L).

The third letter, the Haa’( ـه ), is written like the small a in English, but in reverse. Students were immediately requested to write down each letter as it was presented. They were also shown how to add the diacritical marks (ـــَــ،ـــِــ، ـــُــ), which represent the short vowels [a, i and u] in Arabic.

Click the link below for a short video that illustrates the writing of these letters and words:

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
Assalaamu Alaykum Friends & Students

The Read & Write Arabic Course (see previous post) is essentially a course for adults and children 12 years and older. Ideally all children, especially those between the ages of 12 and 16 years (or younger) should be accompanied by an adult.

The course (which is based on the previous Read Arabic Today Course: http://readarabictoday.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html) is primarily for those who cannot read and/ or write Arabic at all. Although the words that will be taught are primarily Quran vocabulary, the course is not only for people who want to read Al-Quran, but anything in Arabic.

In addition to this the focus will also be on writing words and phrases in Arabic from Day One.  In the first module, students will only learn 5 letters of the Arabic Alphabet.  They will however immediately learn to read and write dozens of words (which appear more than 15 000 times in Al-Quran! https://schoolofarabic.blogspot.com/2011/09/read-understand-15000-arabic-words-in.html). The complete beginner will thus gain the ability to read, write and understand these words which appear throughout the Quran and in Arabic writing in general - after only learning five letters of the Arabic alphabet! The student will also be able to read, write and understand the 26 short sentences presented at the end of Module One.

In Module Two a further 5 letters will be taught.  At this stage the student would have learnt 10 letters of the Arabic Alphabet, but the amount of words will be multiplied at least 4 times!  After completing the first two modules, the Muslim or Non-Muslim student (irrespective of previous knowledge) should be able to read and write (75-100) Arabic words which appear numerous times in Arabic and on every page of Al-Quran! Once again 25 short sentences are presented, which the student should be able to read, write and understand upon completion

The entire course consists of 5 or 6 modules (I'm still in the process of revising the last few modules).  From Module Three onwards additional letters and concepts will be introduced. Aspects relating to Tajwid ul-Quran (Rules of reciting Al-Quran correctly) and Makhaarij al-Khuruf (Place of articulation of letters) will also be covered throughout the course.  At the end of each module a few sentences or ayaat ul-Quran will be presented, which will only include the letters covered at that stage.

Each module will be presented over 2 or 3 sessions, at one session per week.  The student who provides his/ her WhatsApp and/ or email address will gain access to further lessons reinforcing each session attended in person.  These additional lessons will be in the form of audio or video presentations.  The purpose of these additional lessons is to assist the student with revising and internalizing the concepts taught.

The ultimate aim of the course is to teach an absolute beginner how to read, write and understand 100s of words found in Al-Quran and in Arabic in general, In-Sha-Allah!
